Oversized transport escort services

BF2–BF4 escort services tailored to the route and permit

Floegel arranges escort services according to the requirements of each individual transport. We review the conditions in the transport permit, plan the required escort vehicles and personnel and, where needed, coordinate the escort with a route survey, Roadbook and agreed traffic management measures.

Transport preparation

What we check before assigning escort vehicles

In heavy transport logistics, knowing the date and vehicle type is not enough. Permit conditions, the route, potential restrictions at bridges and through narrow passages, permitted time windows, communication between those involved and any support required on the road must all be considered together.

Permits and conditions

We review the documents supplied by the customer: the authorised route, operating conditions, time restrictions, prescribed escorts and any additional measures. Outstanding questions are clarified before the scope of work is agreed.

Meeting points and times

We agree where the escort starts and ends, any handovers between route sections, dispatcher communications and how changes to the schedule will be handled.

Additional coordination measures

If the permit calls for a Roadbook, route survey or traffic management measures (VLM), we treat these as separate planning tasks. Listing a service does not mean it is automatically included in every assignment.

Types of escort vehicles

BF2, BF3 and BF4 – how they differ in practice

The required vehicle type, its role and the number of vehicles depend on the conditions of the specific transport. The overview below explains the equipment and typical purpose of each type. It is not a universal legal classification based on load width.

BF2 escort vehicle with warning beacons on the route

BF2

BF2 – warning and escort support

An escort vehicle equipped with warning and communication systems, used where this form of escort is required by the permit. The vehicle's position relative to the load and the crew's duties depend on the specific assignment and route conditions.

BF3 escort vehicle with variable message sign (WVZ) board

BF3

BF3 – warning and information for following traffic

An escort vehicle fitted with a variable-message traffic sign system (WVZ), generally used to warn and inform traffic travelling behind the load. The signs displayed, vehicle position and operating procedures must comply with the applicable requirements and route-specific conditions.

Heavy-load escort with enhanced BF4 equipment

BF4

BF4 – enhanced variable-message sign system

An escort vehicle equipped with a rotating variable-message traffic sign system for more complex escort situations. It may be used as part of prescribed traffic management measures. The vehicle's equipment does not, in itself, grant the crew statutory traffic control powers. Any relevant authority and the conditions for exercising it must be assessed separately.

Unsure which BF type is required? Send us the section of your permit covering escort requirements. We can discuss what information is needed for your transport.

Personnel and route: two essential parts of preparation

Escort personnel qualifications and authority

Some transports require not only specific escort vehicles but also personnel with the appropriate qualifications and, where legally required, the authority to carry out traffic management measures. We review the conditions of the relevant permit and the applicable legal requirements.

Route survey (Streckenerkundung)

The route shown on paper and the actual conditions on the road may differ. Depending on the agreed assignment, critical sections are checked for clearances, bridges, turning areas, traffic islands, roadworks, obstructions and other features that could affect the transport's passage.

Roadbook – a working document for the journey

Survey findings and agreed procedures are recorded in a Roadbook: the sequence of route sections, key restrictions, instructions for the crew and, depending on the scope of the assignment, photographs or diagrams of critical locations.

Traffic management measures where and when they are needed

A transport may need additional traffic management measures (VLM) beyond escort vehicles: temporary restrictions, prescribed signs and barriers, support at difficult sections or coordination with the responsible authorities. The measures required depend on the transport permit, local orders and the agreed scope of work.

  1. Preparation

Confirm locations, timings, required documents and who is responsible.

  2. Implementation

Install and use only temporary equipment and measures that have been agreed and authorised.

  3. Completion

Remove temporary equipment and close out the work in accordance with the agreed procedure.

Practical challenges

When an escort vehicle alone is not enough

The difficult part of a transport is often not the total distance but specific sections of the route. Preparation depends on the actual dimensions, the permit, road conditions and the authority of those involved.

Tight spaces and turns

At entrances, junctions and interchanges, manoeuvres and the available space may need to be checked in advance.

Bridges and restricted passages

Limits on weight, height, speed or vehicle position on a bridge must be checked against the permit conditions. Unauthorised changes to traffic arrangements are not permitted.

Temporary obstructions

Roadworks, parked vehicles and changes to traffic arrangements can require additional coordination.

Escort handover points

Where a route is divided into sections, the location, timing and procedure for changing escort teams must be agreed.

The measures required are determined by your permit conditions and a review of the road, not by a generic checklist.
